It may be time to hire an advocate
Often it is difficult to get your special needs met in our current educational climate. Funding is low. People are overworked and no one wants to be told that they are not doing their job. At times when you have broached these issues, staff turn the tables on you and make you feel like you are not doing your job. This can very quickly become an adversarial situation. It starts to look like us and them rather than that we are all working together on the same team. Your child needs and deserves to have everyone working together. Sometimes it takes an outside party to make those things happen.
An advocate is a professional whose job it is to make sure you and your child are getting your needs meant. We will work with you, your pediatrician and whichever diagnosticians you may have used to help clarify what your needs are and then work with the district, the school, the staff, and sometimes your child, to make sure that what has been promised is being received. We have experience working with the system and know where to massage and when to badger to make things happen. We will attend meetings with you and make unannounced visits to the school to ensure compliance.
You can decide how much and how often your advocate is involved. Sometimes it is just for now, and other times you may want us to follow your child throughout their education. Whichever you choose, and that need not be decided right away, folk’s attitudes toward you will change when they know you have someone on your side who, knows the law, knows your needs, and knows who should be providing for them. If you want to experiment, next time you have an issue, inform the staff that your advocate will be attending the meetings with you or that your advocate will be contacting them to deal with these issues on your behalf. You will find that people’s attitudes change right away.
It would be best to call and discuss the particulars of your situation with us. An assessment of your needs is complimentary. If you decide that we are a good fit we will be happy to create a plan to address your needs together and decide what the best way to move forward would be. Fees for services will decided dependent on level of need and the amount of time you require.
It is time for you to be able to breathe. To be able to relax a little and know that someone out there really does have your best interests at heart.
